The Porch
-

First I dig out a trench for the footings and then form up the edges.
-

Bob comes all the way from Oregon to help break rocks and we finish off the forms.
-

Another load of rocks, then a layer of sand.
-

The steel is fitted into place and I hire my old friend Joseph and the concrete mixer for the day.
-

First we fill the deep section round the edge.
-

The perimeter is complete and we start to fill and level the rest
-

17 bags of cement and Jim smooths off the last bit

It's not perfect, but not bad for a couple of old men on a Christmas eve we agree.
-

I level off the edge of the concrete slab using sand and cement then lay out the 4x4 wood plate which is bolted to the slab
-

Jim and Darryl give me a day of their time to assemble the frame
-

While Jim and Darryl cut the rafters, I realise that 2 are missing. They are up on the roof, holding the shingles down
-
A bit more trimming and the rafters are nailed into place....
-
at both ends
-
Another day, and all the boards are nailed on, with Jim's help again, ready for covering
-
Roofing felt is applied to the porch and tucked under the existing felt, then I start on the shingles.
-
The shingles move slowly up the roof and finally reach the top.
-
After the ridge tiles are all in place we are ready for "globbing" (sticking down the loose flaps).

At last, I have time to play the piano.
-
The porch roof makes a good deck to watch the sunset, but there is more framing to do.
