Basic Sailing Certificate
Know the names of sail boat parts including mast, boom, halyard, sheet, tiller, tiller extension, rudder, dagger board, sail, bow, stern, port and starboard and know the name of at least one single sailed sailing dinghy. Be able to tie a bowline, figure of eight, make a line fast to a cleat and coil a rope. Be able to rig a single sailed dinghy such as a sunfish then sail it off a beach, round a course including a windward beat, perform capsize drill, and then sail back onto the beach. Be able to de rig the boat and store the parts in a tidy manner.
Two Sail Sailing Certificate
Know the names of sail boat parts including mast, boom, halyard, main sheet, jib sheet, tiller, tiller extension, rudder, center board, main sail, jib sail, bow, forestay, shroud, stern, port and starboard and know the name of at least one two sailed sailing dinghy. Be able to tie a bowline, figure of eight, make a line fast to a cleat and coil a rope. Be able to rig a two sailed boat such as a capri with or without a crew then sail it off a beach, round a course including a windward beat, perform capsize drill, and then sail back onto the beach. Be able to de rig the boat and store the parts in a tidy manner.
Safety Boat Operator
Be able to tie a bowline, figure of eight, make a line fast to a cleat and coil a rope. Start and stop a small outboard motor, raise and lower the motor, operate in shallow drive, use forward neutral and reverse gears in a controlled manner. Manouvre alongside a small sail boat, tow a small sail boat with rope from bow to stern of safety boat. Pull a small sailboat off rocks or dock. Properly set and retrieve an anchor.
Sailing Instructor Certificate
Must already have been awarded the basic sailing, two sail sailing and safety boat operator's certificates. Take at least one novice sailor out in a small sailing dinghy and demonstrate patience and control. Carry out assessment of candidates for basic sailing, two sail sailing and safety boat operator. Be able to gybe both single sailed and two sailed dinghies in a controlled manner. Be able to launch a sailing dinghy from a trailer and move boat with a towing vehicle. Operate a marine VHF two way radio.
